He enlisted in AIF as Alwin Hugo Wuttke, but changed his name in 1919 (while still in the Army), to Alwin Hugh Watkie. In his statutory declaration, dated 4 April 1919, he stated that he was changing his name because Wuttke looked like a German name (even though his father was of Russian descent).
