Enlisted in the AIF under the name "Harry Wearne" on 20 September 1915, giving his age as 44 years and 8 months, thus claiming to have been born in 1870. He nominated his wife, "Mrs Annah Mathilda Wearne" as his next of kin. He served in the same unit as his son, Charles Daniel Wearne, the 11th Field Ambulance. He was discharged medically unfit on 26 April 1918 (at nearly 60 years of age). His true name was not discovered until after he died and his widow sought Repatriation benefits.
