Distinguished Conduct Medal - originally recommended for the Victoria Cross
The recommendation read:
For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty at ALBERT on 5th April 1918,
when all communication was lost and impossible laterally and extremely
dangerous to the rear owing to the extraordinary barrage. Pte. TREGOWETH went
back, with utter conempt of personal danger, mending his line in 6 places and
delivering a message to Battalion Headquarters. This gallant signaller then
returned to his company by the same route, cooly mending his line, which was
again broken, under extraordinary fire. Later, when the situation became most
critical and the companies on the right had withdrawn, Pte. TREGOWETH
volunteered to go to the Battalion on the left and acquiant them with the
situation. Thye track led across 900 yards of machine gun swept country, and
although severely wounded more than once this very brave man struggled on,
crawling the last 50 yards and safely delivered his message, refusing to have
his wounds dressed until his work was done. Pte. TREGOWETH's gallantry and
devotion to duty were magnificent and his conduct throughout the attack was
absolutely heroic.
